In 1942 TheLeftHand The Left Hand, masterless for millennia is by agents of TheBrotherHood the Brotherhood, and exiles herself within her own mind to escape questioning. This leaves a mindless husk of a body, which comes to self-awareness and consciousness in the Lab. This consciousness, which refers to itself only as It, believes that she has been created by the Nazis who are running the Lab. The scientists do not seem to realize that she had full possession of her faculties. They discuss her and run experiments on her as if she is simply a mannequin. Thus it is easy to escape from the Lab... although she first takes revenge on those who had kept her captive.
After escaping, It realizes she is an alien in a strange world. She did not have a childhood, and has no meaningful human experiences. Killing the Nazi scientists came easily, and she feels no remorse for the act, as if it were her second nature. When she killed a soldier, she soaked in his life essence. She is intrigued by this concept of humanity, and so It begins a quest to understand human life. She kills and replaces person after person, trying to understand them. Slowly, life after life, she starts to lose her own sense of self. She begins to have trouble differentiating between the reality of her life as a test tube subject and that of, say, the Chinese immigrant she killed last week. It hungered for the satisfaction of reality, of truly being a "real" person, rather than just some invented thing.
It hatches a plan. She coalesces the parts of her that are evil, and leaves them behind. Then she kills three final people: a young couple and their baby. She then replaces the baby and consciously frees her mind, removing her own personality so that she can truly become the baby, an innocent. This baby is found by Dr. Grant, and is adopted as his daughter GeneviveGrant Genevive.
Later, Genevive comes across the part It shed before becoming the baby. This second half had been revitalized by TheLost the Lost. When the second half of It reintegrates with Genevive, It is briefly able to take control of the body back. She is then able to once again influence events. Because she is still essentially amoral, she does nothing to sabotage the plans and actions of Genevive and her friends, though she does act with total disregard for the life of any one else. Eventually Genevive is able to regain control, and It is once again relegated to the back corners of the mind now shared by several distinct personalities, including TheLeftHand the Left Hand, Genevive, and Genevive's own creation LilyBarnes Lily Barnes.
During the final battle with ZaizenTamari Zaizen, the various personalities fight for control of the body. They end up merging together to form a single personality that contains aspects of all of the personalities, as well as all of their memories and experiences. This new personality is called Eve.
