The Left Hand was one of ZaizenTamari Zaizen's two most important assistants. He created her out of the black ooze found in ZaizensTemple his volcano-based temple. The Left Hand was a shapeshifter, and she used this power to strike fear into anyone who opposed Zaizen. Her standard modus operandi was to get a trusted member of a "troublesome" community alone, kill him/her, and then shapeshift to resemble that person. She would then pretend to be that person, causing trouble and betraying everyone in the community. Since she was thought to be a trusted community leader, suspicion would rarely fall on her until the near the end, when it was already too late. This strategy was well-advertised to all of Zaizen's enemies, a psychological blow to the opposition, since they were well aware that literally no one could be trusted, since The Left Hand could impersonate anyone. Even creating elaborate code-words was not a guard against infiltration, as The Left Hand was able to assimilate the memories and thoughts of those she killed with her power.
After ZaizenTamari Zaizen was killed, The Left Hand was psychologically devastated, but managed to escape and sneak away. Without Zaizen's leadership and guidance, however, she was lost, without purpose or meaning. Her sense of self began slipping away, though she continued to spend the centuries shapeshifting and causing havoc and death amongst the world. It was all she had ever known, and the only way she could hold on to what she felt was her purpose in life.
She was eventually caught by agents of the TheBrotherhood Brotherhood and brought to their Lab. Determined not to give them any information, the Left Hand built barriers in her mind, and retreated into a corner, beginning a long exile within herself. Her body, in the meantime, awakened simply as It. Later, It would itself split into two, one a lifeless husk, the other GeneviveGrant Genevive Grant. TheLost The Lost eventually revitalized The Left Hand, but she was not in control of her body. Just before the final preparations for Zaizen's resurrection, The Left Hand was finally able to seize control from Genevive. She fought against the group of people trying to stop the resurrection. However, the other personalities that were also inhabiting her body were determined to take back control of the body. In the battle for control that followed, all of the personalities were melded into one entity, Eve, who retained the memories and knowledge of all of the personalities. Although Eve had far more memories of death and destruction, she also had experiences with emotions such as love and regret that The Left Hand had not bothered with, and therefore she was more fully human than The Left Hand. She chose to side with those who were against Zaizen.
