Lily Barnes is a shell personality, created by GeneviveGrant Genevive Grant as a cover for Grant's undercover work to find out more about TheAgency the Agency. Despite the fact that Lily had not existed before 1998, she (Lily) was completely unaware of this, and fully believed that she had lived a full and varied life before attending college. Lily was a completely separate personality from Genevive, with her own wants, wishes, and beliefs. Although GeneviveGrant Genevive could take control at any time by essentially "switching off" the Lily personality, she could not control Lily's actions or thoughts. Lily was completely unaware of Genevive's existence. Like classical multiple-personality sufferers, Lily simply "lost time" when Genevive was in control.
Lily believed that she was a child of the system, raised by a variety of foster parents after her own parents had been killed in a car crash. Genevive Grant, who had been adopted, used the name and information from what she believed were her own origins in creating her second personality. In Lily's mind, she had struggled through childhood, and determined to make a better life for herself through education. She gained a scholarship to attend Boston College, and spent part of her college experience working to earn more money, as she was always worried she would not have enough money to graduate. She was majoring in pre-med, hoping to be a biologist.
Lily's roommates at Boston College were AlexCabler Alex Cabler and LaraCooper Lara Cooper. She became great friends with them, and also with the entire Cooper family. In their junior year, both girls revealed their metahuman powers to Lily. Lily was extremely jealous, since she was normally human, and also intrigued by the concept of metahuman abilities. She tried to learn as much as possible, particularly from a biological standpoint, as that was already her educational specialty.
When she graduated from college, she was approached by the TheAgency Agency. The Agency had been alerted to Lily's knowledge of the metahuman world by Alex and Lara's agents. Lily's excellent work in biology was appreciated, and she was recruited to join the research division of the Agency in Nice, France. A few years later, she was apprehended by an agent of TheLost the Lost, and forcibly reverted back to Genevive Grant. Although Lily was able to conference with some of the other personalities inhabiting the body, and was part of the decision making process on a number of occasions, Lily was never again to regain total control of the body. Her personality was later integrated into the single person Eve.
