She is kind to the girls she teaches and to the boys who loiter around potentially listening or watching her teach. She is the daughter of a carpenter who's helped make repairs to the Hotel and Orphanage. She has a mother who helps run the family's carpentry business with her oldest son. Of Ida's two younger brothers, one is in the Navy, the other works as a sailor on a trade ship. Ida take the piano teaching job in order to earn a bit more money for the family until she can find a husband. Taking advantage of Mrs. Black's connections, she does find a husband, the son of a banker, within the year she's teaching the girls. Ella plays at the wedding.
