======Christmas 1867======
**Date:** 1867.12.25
**Related Events:** Christmas1866 Christmas1868
Celeste has presents for everyone! Deco: Clay from the river to see if he wants to add scultping to his artistic pursuits (a collaboration with the Thibodeaus) Callahan: A tiny fabric crown and a rusty bent pin to wear it with Minnie: A carefully constructed but very fragile "doll" made out of poorly pressed flowers. Erin: rag-quilt handkerchief (not very useful, but pretty) Shawn: a handkerchief to match Erin's Valerie: a gnarled tree branch that looks a bit like a bone Ollie: a multi-colored stuffed cat made from rags Jeanne: A stuffed fish (for teaching her to swim) and a little blanket for the fish and frog Cole: A military-looking flag with a big C on it attached to a stick. She apologizes later that she forgot his real name is Nicholas #>
<#bill: Cole effusively thanks Celeste for the flag and waives it around most of the day until he is thrice threatened that it's going to be taken away. He then lashes the flash to the head of his bed.
Having learned from the year before, Cole also has gifts for people. Deco: a small partially used book of blank pages. The book is torn and dirty, though Cole has tried to clean it. When he gives the book he tells the story of the 'great adventure' he had finding it half buried in the back of the grave yard. Callahan and Shawn: Spears (sticks with the end slightly sharpened and a flimsy strip of leather wrapped around the bottom). Erin and Minnie: Each gets a poster/ad for women's clothing. Like Deco's book it seems worse for wear (a little dirty, the corners torn) and Cole has a story has to how he found them while exploring behind a nearby clothing story while on an errand for Abner. Valerie: a old coin (like 1700s) he found wedged in a crack in the cobble stones. Jefferson: a promise to peel/skin 100 potatos/carrots because he knows it's his least favorite part of cooking. Jeanne: A small piece of white soap cut roughly into a cross shape. Cole proudly announces that he didn't wash with soap for many days so that he could make them. Ollie: A small wooden box with a lid (again there's a story to how he found it). Inside are a rock and some grass. Cole explains that he can use it as a home for his occasional pets. Celeste: A rope/leather bracelet. The bracelet is crudely braided together and is clearly made up of many different materials (different colors/kinds of thread, some rope, a strip of leather, a strip of linen). It's not very well done, but Cole is clearly proud of it. "It's got green in it!" he says. "I think you look nice in green." He shrugs awkwardly and then walks away.#>

<#court: Jeanne keeps her fish on her bed, covered by its blanket, and sleeps with it every night. For Celeste she has a bunch of sassafras roots tied together with string (for making tea, since Celeste is interested in nursing). For Callahan and Shawn, she has pieces of flint (broken off from the one she brought to the orphanage). For Deco, a chunk of lime he can use as chalk. For Valerie, an opaque stone from the riverbed. For Erin and Minnie, dried flowers tucked in a pocket of moss. For Cole, dried leaves stuck into the shape of a star (like a badge), with a hairpin for attaching it to clothing (story about how she found it in the laundry when she was subbing for Erin one day). For Ollie, a flat rock with a cross of lime sketched on it (and a grin). For Jefferson, a small collection of herbs collected from the garden. [Note - This was originally posted in 1868 erroneously - it was meant to be the first Christmas Jeanne gave gifts, which would be the first Christmas after she was given gifts! Sorry for confusion. Bill, I moved your response to the gift to this page.] #>

<#ann: Drat! I meant for this to be Celeste's second Christmas there, which would be 1866, not 1867 (that's why Ollie only gets an apple: she's only known him for about three weeks and didn't have time to plan something for him, but sees that he's always hungry.). But the Timeline dates were screwed up in that section, so when I extrapolated from Louis's cooking the frog Jeanne gigs, I used that date, which was erroneously 1867. Grrr. So what was here was moved to 1866. I'll think up what presents Celeste gives in 1867 later. Sorry!!! #>
Deletions:
Celeste has made some presents for most of the children. Callahan: A pile of smooth round stones for skipping on the river. Valerie: A strange-looking rock that has a stripe going all the way around it. Deco: Celeste has been saving the ends of her pencils when they get short enough for her to make the excuse that she can't use them. She gives these to Deco to draw with. Minnie: Seeds from various plants she has seen growing around town (I feel like she gets out more often than Minnie does on errands.) She has no idea which seed goes to which plant, but Minnie accepts them graciously. Erin: Some tea that she and Minnie mixed up together to help Erin's cough. Shawn: Also gets skipping rocks. Cole: a cloth ball she's made by sewing scraps of rags together. Jeanne: A somewhat clumsily sewn frog made from scraps of rags. Ollie: An apple she stole from the kitchen supplies.#>
<#court: Ann, I love this idea. Jeanne is thrilled with the frog, and carries it around with her all day, ultimately putting it in her bag when the day is over, which is (you know) where she keeps her most precious things). Does anyone think they exchanged any gifts in 1866, or is Celeste forging this as a first-time thing? If it's the latter, Jeanne looks very happy, but a little abashed. She thanks Celeste profusely, and later leaves a flower from the garden on her bed. #>

But the Timeline dates were screwed up in that section, so when I extrapolated from Louis's cooking the frog Jeanne gigs, I used that date, which was erroneously 1867. Grrr. So this should really be 1866. The baby was distracted by "washing dishes" and is now distracted by me typing, so I'll have to figure out how to fix that later. In the meantime everyone can react like it's 1866. Sorry!
And just in case it's important to Kelly (the only one there at the time) , Celeste did not give out gifts in 1865. It took her a little while to get her feet under her, and I also felt she had to be old enough for it to occur to her that maybe she should be doing some giving, not just receiving. #>
