Dear Cole,
We have heard from Jeanne that she is settling well, which I know you will be glad to hear. The orphanage is much the same as when you left. I am increasingly aware that I am not longer happy here, and will move my departure date up a few months to leave for Philadelphia as soon as possible.

While I still wish that you could find a less dangerous employment, I have resigned myself to having a soldier for a brother, and so reluctantly wish you well. I am torn, as failing in your training means that you will be more likely to be killed in battle, yet excelling will mean you are placed on more dangerous missions. So I shall beg you to be as mediocre as possible for you, though I know my entreaty shall be ignored.

Please, Cole, do try not to be killed. I don't think any of us could withstand a further dwindling of our family.
