Wiki source for Celeste
*born: June 3, 1858*
Possessions upon entering the orphanage: stuffed frog, two books (one is Aesop's Fables, the other is an adult book, both are currently in the Black's office), red hair ribbons, cltohes that are redistributed to the other children.
Celeste is clearly biracial, with dark chocolate eyes, frizzy brown hair she keeps tightly braided, and light brown skin. She is skinny, but with good height, implying that she was once used to eating more, but has not been eating well since arriving at the orphanage. She generally has a bright red ribbon in her hair. Nora doesn't like any of the children, but she seems to ride Celeste even harder than the others, and often refers to her as the "snob" even years after Celeste has been there. When Cole shows up, Celeste is still reacting with surprise when the object of racial discrimination, but by the time everyone else gets there she is no longer surprised, though it often makes her angry. She has a temper, but it has a slow burn. She's far more likely to get revenge than to throw a punch. She is not shy, but she can be very guarded with new people, particularly adults. She enjoys reading and owns a handful of books. If asked, she will tell you that her daddy died in the war and her mommy got sick. She doesn't like to talk about that much, but doesn't refuse to talk about it either.
During her childhood Celeste declares that she wants to be a nurse, and actively pursues knowledge about first aid and medicine. Later, around 12 or so, she realizes that most nurses are drudges who do laundry, cook and serve meals, and generally just wait on patients. She wants to actually make people better, not just make them feel better, so she decides nursing is not going to be a good fit for her. If she were male or a white girl she would be a doctor, but she's not.
Like most of the children I know, Celeste through the years has a series of intense interests that occupy her attention for months, then are either summarily dropped or put on the backburner to be a lifelong interest but at a much lower level of intensity. These interests include: birdwatching (possibly inspired by one of Ollie's foundlings?), tatting, whittling wooden figures, astronomy/astrology, Latin. She learns some card tricks from Cole, dancing and music from Ella, French from Jeanne and Ollie (and Louis).
She loves games, though she is not nearly as competitive as Cole, and she doesn't particularly enjoy gambling, though she'll play if that's all the others want to do. She enjoys chess with Cole and Abner. I think it'd be fun to have them play marbles as children.
She loves stories, and will listen eagerly to anyone telling a story. When she is older she starts filching the day-old newspapers so she can read the serialized stories. Later she also reads the news stories.
