====Abner Teaches Chess====
In the doldrums of winter the kids are all somewhat restless. Cole admires Abner's chess board, and Abner offers to teach him to play. When Celeste finds out she wants lessons too (along with whatever other characters desire to learn). At first they play with Abner's chess board, but later they work together to build their own. (This is when Celeste becomes interested in learning to whittle wood.) After that they sometimes play up in the tower, or in their bedroom. Abner still plays with them sometimes, especially as the children learn and become real opponents. Cole and Celeste enjoy playing together and are generally a good match, with Cole winning every so slightly more often.
Ollie isn't interested for his first years at the orphanage, but later (as he matures a bit) it becomes something he'll ask to learn.
Bill - we had talked about playing chess together. I made Cole the instigator of the chess-learning rather than Celeste because I thought that he has a more solid relationship with Abner (since he sees him more often) and is more intense about games. Is that okay? I can change it if not. <#bill: No - it all sounds fine to me #>
<#court: This is appealing to Jeanne, especially in these first few months as she struggles with conversation. She picks up the rules quickly and enjoys playing the other kids in this structured environment. #>
<#kate: Thanks for the inclusion =). I think she would be interested in learning if that's what the majority of the kids are doing. I think it might be a little dull for her though so I think she might get the gist and then move on unless the stakes become more interesting(?).#>
**Hot NPC action
Cal has some talent for the game but does not apply himself, anyone who does quickly passes him. Cal generally knows who will beat him and begs off games against those people looking for other things to do.
Shawn is very good at Chess, and enjoys playing anyone at any time. He usually only loses if distracted (alchol, or Erin)
Valerie, Minnie, Deco, Jefferson, and Erin show no interest in playing, but being children generally pay enough attention that you think they all know the basic rules.
Mr. Black also plays and any children that get really good (Shawn, Cole? Celeste?) Would be invited to play him.
Abner and Mr. Black often have matches on Sunday afternoons.**
