Hello everyone,

It feels so strange to write a letter to you instead of just talking side by side during chores. Cole, who was very gentlemanly - though do not tell him I said it! - escorted me to Memphis as planned. We stayed the night with a photographing acquaintance of the Stockton’s, who had sent word ahead that I would be coming to town. Then Cole, feeling his duty accomplished, was on his way early the next morning. I wish him well.

Here is the unbelievable part. A few hours after his departure, just after I had gone to secure a boardinghouse room, snakes fell from the sky. There was a hard rain; you know how rain can be. But then, snakes - so many one could not see the ground for them. They covered several blocks. People talk, but no one seems to have an answer. Did they fall from the sky? Did they appear as if from a circus magician in one of the old shows? I wondered; I did not know whether to be excited or nervous at wondering… but felt nothing. You will understand what I mean.

I have yet to meet many of the tenants of my boardinghouse, but I am sure I will, as I am working for keep. I have Dean’s old dry-plate camera, and while it brings sad memories, I am grateful for the future it can give me. Wish me luck and vision; my plan is to try my hand at outdoor photography, and liaise with any of the several publications in the city.

Please tell me news of home. I miss you all.
Jeanne
