After church, those who attend the circus see acrobats; aerial silks; clowns; elephants; equestrian acts; exotic animal menageries including tigers and bears; fire eaters and breathers; fortune tellers; gymnastic dancers; hooping; jugglers; knife throwing; lion tamers; living human curiosities; magic shows; musical bands; plate spinners; stilt walkers; strongmen; sword swallowing; tightrope walkers; trapeze artists; unicyclists.
Some sneak in while others do a few errands for someone in the circus to pay their fare.
<#kate: Just putting the needs in case anyone wants to add something to this specific circus.#>
<#jonah: Ollie seems really ambivalent about going to the circus this year, but agrees to go, and seems to genuinely enjoy himself. #> <#court: Jeanne keeps an eye on him, and as the day goes on she seems relieved and relaxes. #>
<#ann: Celeste and Cole don't pay to get in. They spend a lot of time in the carney games area that evening before and after the main performance, but don't come back with any prizes, though they seem satisfied with themselves. #>
<#ann: After watching the circus jugglers, Celeste realizes that she has been trying to do the three-ball cascade incorrectly this whole time. It takes awhile, but with her new knowledge she eventually figures it out. Over the course of several weeks/months she improves and becomes a competent juggler.#>
<#court: Jeanne once again seems drawn by the fortune-tellers and spends a lot of time in their area. She still seems part repelled and part fascinated, but eventually convinces one woman to show her the basics of Tarot cards. #>
<#bill: Cole sees one of the fortune tellers, but is clearly disappointed. When asked what she said he just shakes his head and says, "She's a fraud." #>
<#court: If Jeanne notices him wandering over there, she would have joined - or have already been over there to begin with when he walked up. Or if you'd prefer Cole be there alone, Jeanne will question him about it extensively and go over separately. What do you think? #>
<#bill: I think it's fun to have them both check it out - perhaps going over separately and then running into each other there and handing out together. What is she looking to do there? At this stage he wants to check them out and see what they do and if they're legit or scams...and he thinks it's easier to see that by watching them work with other people than the person they're working with...so he's probably not going in for a reading, but instead watching other people get them. It might be fun for him to watch Jeanne get a reading. He'd totally chip in money for that to happen....As you can see I was assuming that she's a conartist and doesn't demonstrate any real skill? Is that problem for you since you seem to become her mentee? We can change that...or at least have Cole not be able to see through her con at this point. I will say, if he realizes she's conning people, he'll lose interest. If he's not sure, or thinks she's really psychic, he's going to maintain an interest and come back next year. #>
<#court: Bill, it's possible there is more than one person. Maybe you do see a fraud? I was imagining 3-4, though I guess I don't know the size of the circus; I'm fine if others had a different vision. Jeanne was also going to observe; her goal is to see who the most likely one to approach would be. Then she approaches her and convinces her to show Jeanne the cards. Jeanne is intent on learning what she can. She will go over and be watching, then maybe Cole can come up and see her there. #>
<#ann: Does Jeanne acquire a set of Tarot cards to use with the other kids? Either now, or later. I bet Deco would help paint them.#>
<#court: Ann, I think yes - probably now is too early, maybe next year. #>
<#bill: Conflict! If she does get a Tarot deck how does that go over with the 'good' Christians/Catholic? Is that Jeanne's conflict? Why she's part repelled?#>
<#court: Yep, conflict! I would guess others (Mrs. Black and other kids) will be against it. Yes, that's part of Jeanne's conflict... it is against her background. But she is also very superstitious and feels that she needs control over dark forces that seem to be against her. Perhaps it's better if we have a conversation about the reasons she is for/against the cards; it's a bit complicated. #>
<#kate: Ella wouldn't have a problem with Jeanne doing Tarot, she'd be pretty encouraging actually once she gets the notion it's something Jeanne is fighting with herself about doing. She's not into fortune tellers herself, so at the circus she's probably snooping in other areas. #>
