April 4, 1870
After the kidnapping the day before, Jeanne had asked to switch garden chores with someone and Celeste had volunteered. In the end, it turns out that Jeanne remains in the garden, but Celeste, with the aid of some minor bribes, has swapped with Minnie for the week. Celeste is a little uncertain about what she's doing in the garden, but Jeanne rushes them through and gets them finished and back inside as quickly as possible.
When they're done, they tend to go into the kitchen. The first day, Louis makes Jeanne soup, convinced that she must be feeling sick (begging off dinner, acting strange). She thanks him and eats the soup.
That week she continues to rush them through garden work (getting it done, but fast) and coming into the kitchen, where she is happy to work, not just take up space, so she can stay.
