Revision [28201]
This is an old revision of 1866.11.20.OllieFirstTowerNight made by JonahPetri on 2013-02-14 19:08:18.
Ollie sees folks going up to the tower after Lizzy's left them for the night. He follows. (Who might be going?)
Cal would invite/dare Ollie on the first night. He is not going to just go and ditch him.
<#court: Cal walks up to Ollie and, glancing to Jeanne in the assumption she will interpret, invites him to join at the tower. #>
<#ann: Celeste, who is standing nearby, watches this, and then tells Ollie "You come, she comes, then she gets to have fun too!" #>
<#court: Jeanne smiles at Celeste, then looks to Ollie. She sees him watch the other kids start to crawl out the window, gives a smile and a shrug, and moves to go as well. (In French to Ollie)"I have not gone before," she tells him. "But I have watched them. It is only the kids, and they tell stories and play games." #>
Ollie and Jeanne head up to the tower. Cal, Shawn, Jefferson and Cole are already up there. Celeste is following behind. Seeing them arrive, Cal stands and announces, "Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight we have the honor of a new brother and sister among us, joining our merry band for the first time." He smiles broadly, understanding that Jeanne and Ollie don't know what he's saying, but still reveling in the ceremony of it all.
"Therefore, since they've come here to St. James to stay, we shall welcome them in the way which is our tradition." Cal pauses for dramatic effect. "Shawn, Cole: the crowns, please." Shawn produces two paper crowns, each made of newspapers and glue. The second one much more shodly constructed, and looks newer...maybe made this afternoon...
They solemnly carries them over to Cal. Cal motions for Jeanne and Ollie to approach. Cautiously, they do. Jeanne notices that Deco, Erin and Valerie have followed behind them, and are watching the proceedings.
Deco, is sort of half paying attention, he goes over to a full sized mural of all the kids (Valarie, Cal, Shawn, Erin, Deco, Jefferson, Celeste, and, Cole, he begins adding two new figures...
"Now everyone here knows me as Cal, but my full title is Cal the King. I am King Callahan, the Wicked. Ruler of St. James Castle. And as king it is my solemn duty to welcome and honor new family as they arrive. And to this end, as is our tradition, for one night and one night only, I shall cede my throne to the two of you. So come forward and be crowned." He motions vigorously for them to approach further, and then to kneel. Jeanne catches his drift and follows the instructions, and Ollie mimics his sister.
Cal takes the first crown from Cole, and holds it in the air. "I crown thee Queen Jeanne!" he declares, slowly placing the crown on her head. The rest of the kids echo his proclamation, "All Hail Queen Jeanne!" He repeats the ritual the newer crown that Shawn is holding, "I crown thee King Ollie!" The assembled kids shout in reply, "All Hail King Ollie!".
Valarie quietly whispers, "The king is dead, god save the king."
"Now remember," Cal cautions, "you're just king and queen for tonight. But enjoy it while you can! Welcome to the Kingdom of St. James." Ollie and Jeanne clearly don't really follow what he's saying, but nod in acceptance, as it seems the right thing to do.
At that, Cal motions for them to rise, and says, "Well now, come meet your new family. Introduce yourselves." Ollie and Jeanne turn. "Let's see," says Cal, "You've met Lieutenant Cole and Lady Celeste already. And this is Chef Jeff. Jefferson bows. "Here's Rembrandt Deco, Esquire, and Captain Shawn. There's Princess Erin, and there's Duchess Val. The girls curtsy to the new king and queen And Minnie is the chicken who is cowering in her bed; you'll meet her eventually."
Cal continues, "Now as King and Queen, you shall take turns picking one of your subjects. That person must, as is the tradition, tell you a story about themselves. And since your English is about as good as my French, each one of us shall tell our stories in mime. King Ollie! You pick first!" Cal is frantically pantomiming the act of pointing to try to get the child to understand. Ollie takes a moment, but catches on. He ponders for a moment, and then points grandiosely at Cole.
<#ann: Celeste quietly murmurs as much of this as she can. Which is probably not much, since mime, traditional, subjects, etc are not really part of the French she's learned from Louis. #>
<#bill: Cole smiles, eager to be his story telling skills to the test. He tells the story with great care and animation and by the time he's done he's out of breath. It's pretty clear that he's relating a dream that he had recently and the dream involved running and hiding from some kind of monster.#>
Next, Jeanne picks Celeste. <#ann: Celeste decides she can't tell a story by herself and make any sense at all, so she has a quickly whispered conversation with Cole, Cal, and Shawn. Then she points at Cal and Shawn and says "Not orphanage. Town boys." in French. Then she mimes walking down the street. Cal and Shawn pantomime menacing her (Cal with a particularly crazy grin and gleam in his eye to make it clear that he's just pretending, going way overboard) and Cole jumps over to help her. The boys "fight" (Cal and Cole getting a little carried away) and Celeste pretends to throw rocks at them. Shawn and Cal react with mock fright and run away, and Cole and Celeste do a happy dance together. Then they all bow dramatically, and Celeste looks up to see how the audience has appreciated her/their efforts. #>
Then Ollie picks Deco.
Then Jeanne picks Valerie.
Then Ollie picks Cal. "Finally!" Cal cries, as he launches into a story.
Then Jeanne picks Erin.
Ollie picks Jefferson.
Jeanne picks Shawn.
Ollie, seeing nobody left around the circle, swings his pointer to Jeanne.
<#court: Jeanne mimes a story in which she seems to be alone. It is dark, but she has a light strapped to her head, and she is wandering around, pillaging food and supplies. Someone catches sight of her but she ducks away and sneaks back around, to triumphantly sneak away some delicious tidbit. She pauses at the end of the story, and then slowly points to herself, and gets on all fours, baring her teeth. "Je suis un loup," she says. Then she sits back and gestures around at the watching group. "Et vous," pointing emphatically at them all, "vous voici ma meute." #> She seems satisfied with that, and turns to Ollie, pointing to him as the last storyteller.
<#bill: Cole leans into Celeste, "She is a wolf and we are all dead?"#>
<#ann: Celeste shakes her head. "She's a wolf...and we here are...something? She looks pretty happy, so something good? Definitely not dead, though." And she shudders at the thought.#>
Ollie mimes a story about noodling for Catfish, and getting one so big that when he put it in the bucket, it tipped the bucket right over, and his dinner swam away.

(He may have to use Jeanne to translate.
<#court: Though Jeanne has been there for a month and is certainly understanding more, she has not done much in terms of speaking English (or even trying to) until Ollie arrives, so I'm not sure Cal would use her for interpreting. Maybe a friendly hand gesture to join as they go out the window would work better? #>
I sort of disagree here Court, now I realize that she might not be speaking well but I think she has a pretty good grasp of English and could translate for Ollie, not translate Ollie's words back, but still communicate what Cal is saying to Ollie. Some subtly lost but not much.
<#court: What I meant was not that Jeanne would not be capable, but that literally, Jeanne has not spoken any English since she arrived, with the exception of a few hours ago, a word or two with Celeste in the kitchen. Her grasp of English is still minimal, yes, but the not attempting to speak English at all (and speaking only minimally even when spoken to in French) is clearly a choice she has made rather than purely a comprehension issue. So it doesn't make a lot of sense to me that Cal would go to her to ask rather than go to one of the other people (Celeste, Cole) also standing there who have shown willingness to interpret. #>
@Court - I understand. I feel like I might not be communicating well. Let me try again.
Cal thinks that you can understand english, and knows that you speak french and he knows that its your brother. He would expect that you could translate anything he said to your brother.
This is part of his way of doing things, treating you like you have always been there, and always have been family. I think he doesnt stop say Celeste from jumping in and translating, but he just speaks to the two of you like you can understand him, and rolls with it.
<#bill: I have gotten the impression that Cal takes the lead on this...but if he wasn't asking/inviting Cole would have. The same goes for Jeanne. I know that Court is saying she hasn't gone before, but Cole would have invited/encouraged her early on...with his bad French/his Spanish/gestures/translation from Celeste. #>
<#court: I understand that Jeanne has been welcome - she just has not been very open thus far. She hasn't been rude, just not interested. However, there is a noticeable change at this point, in attitude and openness. #>
Minor conflict as Bill said. Cal would have continued to put some peer pressure for her to join in up to that point. Minnie I think would have defended her (Minnie rarely goes to the tower, and appears to be a bit afraid of heights) but I think Cal would have asked every night, and looked disappointed everytime she said no.
<#court: Jeanne would listen to him, acknowledge the invitation, and politely decline, shaking her head, before going to bed. Until tonight. #>
"To get you started in this family, the last person to arrive will tell you one thing about everyone present." He looks pointedly at Deco (since it's still Jeanne's first time at the Tower, he skips her, and Minnie is not there) and says cheerfully, "Looks like it's still you!" (unless we think Deco is too young, then it would fall to Cole, but guessing Deco could do it?)
