Ella has been visibly interested in all of the music the kids have been playing at the orphanage, and while Ella was teaching Ollie to dance <#kate: OllieDancing two days before #>, Jeanne had proposed maybe showing her some tunes on the washboard. <#kate: During the conversation, Ella's very interested in learning but tries to keep her enthusiasm in check, to go with what she sees as Jeanne's more temperate manner. #>

Today, Jeanne initiates a conversation with Ella for one of the first times, and offers to show her. <#kate: Ella again is excited but let's Jeanne take the lead. #> They meet up after afternoon chores and Jeanne sings her some French tunes, translating them as she goes. <#kate: Ella pays extra attention, picking up the tune before the words, but giving her best shot at the French version. #>

That night in the tower, she makes sure to have snuck the washboard and a thimble, and sits by Ella, showing her the basics (a song to go with one of the tunes she taught her in the afternoon) as the kids make music.

<#kate: Ella watches intently, and waits for Jeanne to hand over the washboard and thimble before trying the technique she's been observing. Her voice singing the songs is much better than her initial try at the washboard and she needs some instruction to get it right but by the end of the night she's a decent beginner. #>

Jefferson joins in with the songs that he knows. He sings a bit off key but clearly is enjoying himself.

<#jonah: Ollie sings along with the French songs with enthusiasm. He gets a bit sad at a few points, and goes and hugs Jeanne. For the ones with a bit more bounce to them, he'll hambone. #>

<#ann: Celeste watches the pair of them with a certain amount of unhappiness, but manages a smile whenever they look her way. By the end of the night she's managed to work herself into the music session and is in a better mood. #>

<#bill: Cole starts off playing with Jeanne and Ella. He gets up and goes over to Celeste when she seems unhappy. "What do teach me one of your kitchen songs?" he asks.#>

<#ann: She grins at him, and says "Nah, I like listening to Jeanne play the washboard. You should play your harmonica, though." And she looks much happier, Cole's cheered her up. #>

<#court: Jeanne, noting that Celeste has joined the music-making, switches to play one of the songs she knows Celeste likes best, and gives her a smile. #>

<#ann: Celeste brightens noticeably when Jeanne plays her song. #>

Cal and Shawn play a vigorous game of marbles while the others sing.

and since part of this event goes up in the tower,
