<#ann: After Abner teaches everyone how to play chess, Celeste wishes she had a chess board of her own to practice with. The kids manage to cobble together some rocks and things so they can play, but it's hard to keep track of which knobbling stone is the knight and which one is the king. She starts talking about carving one herself. She says several times that she could use a knife from the kitchen to whittle with, but she never makes an actual move to do so, since Louis is pretty easy going, but there are some lines you do not cross, and using his good kitchen knives for anything other than food is not going to go over very well. She tries to use one of the steak knives they use in the dining hall, but it doesn't work very well, and she's caught and punished.

Cole, meanwhile, has been poking around and manages to dig up somewhere a very old, very dull, somewhat rusty knife. He polishes it and uses Louis's whetstone to sharpen it, then proudly presents it to Celeste as a present. She's thrilled, and starts trying to carve right away. She's somewhat surprised when she's not very good at it, but that doesn't stop her. With practice she eventually develops the skill.#>

<#court: Jeanne, who often sits with Celeste when she whittles, at least when they both have downtime, offers to decorate the pieces for her, using berries, petals, lime, and other odds and ends from the garden that can make smears of color. She is not able to make any fine exacting details, but she can make them a little more festive and distinguishable! #>

<#ann: Celeste happily takes her up on this offer, and wants to find out more. She pays close attention to what Jeanne does to color and decorate. Celeste does not have much of a design sense. She can appreciate what looks good, but isn't very good at producing pleasing designs on her own. What about Jeanne? Is that something she's particularly good at, or is it just something she enjoys doing? (I enjoy juggling. It doesn't mean I'm good at it.) #>

<#court: Jeanne is not particularly artistic, but knows which grasses/berries, etc can give a good smear of color. Beyond that, it's just fun and decorative and self-entertaining. =) #>
