1866.11.23.JeanneAndOllieGraffitiPrivate

When people go to wash up for dinner this evening, they run into Ollie and Jeanne, having just washed and on their way to the kitchen door. They both look cheerful. It is dark, but as they pass the puddles of light from the kerosene lamp at the water pump, an observant person might notice that Jeanne, having just finished work in the gardens, has a thin, dusty white streak down her back, and Ollie, looking like a boy who doesn't quite have the patience for washing up, has hair that looks dusty. They are almost inside when Minnie comes striding up to the pump looking important. "Someone is in trouble. Someone has painted a huge cross on the door!" Commotion ensues.

<#ann: Celeste is going to give the siblings a suspicious look, then run to the door to see for herself. Is it just a regular cross? I'm too lazy to google, is this particular day of religious significance? #> <#court: No day of particular religious significance. The cross is a large cross-shaped smear of white (3-4 feet tall). #>

<#bill: Cole turns to Minnie and tries to subtly step in front of Jeanne. "Well, you'd better go find Miss Lizzy then, Minnie. Or else they're liable to think you did it..."
<#court: Cole can probably not step in front of her unless he is also by the kitchen door (not by Minnie) but he can move to try to block her from view a little) #>

Minnie's eyes go wide, "But it wasn't me!"

Cole shrugs, "Maybe not, but you were the only one of us who was all alone. If I was you, I'd want to be the one to tell Miss Lizzy first. She was assisting Mrs. Cromwell in Room 214 last I saw her." Note: Cole is misdirecting her. Miss Lizzy had helped earlier in the day, but he knows she's long gone now. He knows she has gone back to her own room to clean up/change for the evening meal. Nora is doing the same.

Minnie nods her head fiercely and spins on her heels. She rushes inside. As soon as she turns her back Cole looks at Jeanne and points to his own back mouthing to her, "Your back."#>

<#court: Jeanne, having caught Cole's eye, catches the motion he makes and her eyes light up with excitement. She smiles, nods, and turns around so that she goes through the door backwards, ushering Ollie through as well. #>

<#jonah: Ollie smiles up at Celeste, and looks particularly excited with anticipation. #>

<#ann: After running out to look at the cross, Celeste rejoins the rest of the children, and tries to brush the dust out of Ollie's hair when no one who might rat them out is looking. #>

<#bill: Cole chases after Celeste and whispers in her ear while she cleans up Ollie. "She's got paint on her back, but doesn't seem to care. They're going to get caught." He sounds both stressed and the idea of them getting caught and really bewildered by their behavior. #>

Kelly needs an answer to where the cross is before responding with some hot NPC action. <#court: The cross is on the orphanage door directly across from the hotel back staircase (thus Minnie passed it on her way from the gardens. Ollie and Jeanne have passed the water pump area and when Minnie shouts for the first time, they are a step from the kitchen door, just about to go inside. Minnie is over by the water pump, where children are gathered unless you place yourself somewhere else. #>

That place is fine, thanks!

<#court: Jeanne and Ollie go in and wait by their chairs, ready to sit but waiting for the others to arrive, as is the custom. Ollie's hair is much less dusty, thanks to Celeste's ministrations, and if anyone were to walk behind Jeanne (though her back is to the wall), they could note that the white streak on her back is mostly brushed away, though her dress is still slightly pale and discolored in a smudged area. To the casual observer, nothing looks amiss. When Louis walks through the room and says "Bonjour!" the smiles they give him in reply are especially glowing, but they are clearly trying to tone down their excitement. They look eagerly at the others as they file into the room. #>

(not sure if anyone wants to jump in here)

<#court: Ms. Lizzy enters the room and greets the children. She checks her timepiece and then scans the group, noting an empty chair. She looks mildly surprised as she realizes it is Minnie who is tardy. A small crease appears on her forehead, but she invites the children to sit down and begin. She tells them she will be back in a moment, and turns to leave. #>

As Ms Lizzie exits Nora, with Minnie trailing behind comes in. The thin woman crosses over to Louis and they whisper something Louis frowns and follows Nora out towards the back. Minnie looks proud.

<#bill: Cole looks at Celeste pleadingly, "You've got to make her understand! They'll be back in a minute." #>

<#ann: Ann is confused. She thought that when Jeanne backs through the door, she was backing out into the courtyard so she could go wash herself off, but now isn't sure. Can I get a clarification on whether Cole is correct when he says that they are still covered in paint and clearly going to get caught? #>
<#court: Ann, the sibs were still going into the kitchen. But when Cole motions to Jeanne, she turns so that her back is no longer to the kids, going backwards through the kitchen door. #>
<#court: *note: I answered Ann's question on the bottom, but also added description to the top paragraph and to the description of Ollie and Jeanne sitting down. #>

<#jonah: Ollie turns to his sister, beaming, and says in French, "They have no idea! We surprised them!!" #>
