<#kate: The girls find ribbons and the boys handkerchiefs on their beds. #>

<#bill: Who of the girls can sew?/has demonstrated she can sew? I think Cole would like to have his initials stitched on his handkerchief - I'm assuming all the boy's handkerchiefs are identical...and so he would approach one of the girls to help him.#>
<#court: Jeanne can! At least as much as to mend neatly and make simple garments. So it may not be fine embroidery, but if you ask her if she can sew, she would say yes (and could make passable initials!) #>
<#kate: Ella can as well which is how she makes her Mardi Gras masks. I imagine some of the chores might also involve mending sheets, curtains, and such so I would think it would be a part of Lizzy's instruction. Perhaps they used their combined sewing skills to make the curtain? I'll second Court, in that if Cole asks, she'd be happy to. #>
<#ann: Celeste hasn't done it in awhile, but she was learning fine embroidery before she came to the orphanage. She'd also be happy to help if asked. #>

All the NPC girls can as well. (Minnie enjoys it as does Erin) Valarie can and sews skulls and things onto her clothing much to Ms Lizzie's chagrin.
<#bill: Okay. Thank you, ladies. I'd say Cole most likely approaches Ella simply because it sounds like she has demonstrated the most skill with sewing due to the masks. But he likely asks with you all around...I imagine at night in the room. The same night the gifts are received. #>
<#kate: Ella would happily sew his initials and probably scrounges up a box of "pretty random things" she's collected over the months for her mask, and asks he if wants any of them added. They are mostly dropped sequins, buttons, bits of cloth, or other decorative bits and pieces, maybe there's a soldier's button. #>
<#bill: Cole thanks her for putting on his initials, but declines adding anything else. Almost immediately after the initials are sewn in Cole starts to use the handkerchief to attempt magic tricks. #>

<#jonah: Ollie happily takes the handkerchief and arranges it neatly in his pocket. He asks around to see who gave them. Does Ella fess up? #>
<#kate: It depends on how he asks. If it's to her directly, like Jeanne did, she might, but if it's just an ask to the group she most likely holds her tongue. #>
<#jonah: I think Ollie first looks around to see if anyone looks particularly proud of themselves. If it's not obvious from that much, he'll probably ask generally to the group "Who gave these? They're so cool!" #>
<#kate: Ella's face doesn't reveal anything. She'd probably look down into Minnie's hair (which she's braiding to show Jeanne (and maybe Celeste) how to incorporate the ribbons, concentrating on that. If it's asked again or people are more inquisitive, I can see one of the girls, once they have poking her and making it evident she's the culprit. #>

<#court: Is this something new? (i.e. We didn't expect to find this from the Blacks, right?). If it something that hasn't happened before, Jeanne approaches Ella and asks her if the ribbon is from her. #>
<#kate: Ella replies to Jeanne with a sly smile and wishes her Happy New Year. She then raises her own ribbons and asks if she wants some braids? #>
<#court: Jeanne looks surprised and pleased, and answers with an enthusiastic "Yes! Could you show me how?" #>
<#ann: Oh, I didn't realize that Ella didn't take credit. Celeste will also approach Ella then, (maybe with Jeanne because we talked about being surprised?) #>
<#kate: She'd give Celeste the same sly grin and Happy New Year wish. She'd be thrilled to show Jeanne the braids and probably rope Minnie in and start showing how incorporate the ribbons. #>

<#bill: Question: Ella has been there for a few years now. I think there's a pattern of at least some of the kids giving gifts to the others on Christmas. I don't think we've event up to 1873, but does Ella give gifts on Christmas as well? #>
<#kate: I wasn't sure how the Christmases have gone, whether there are gift givings or not. Ella would probably try to do something nice after the first year - it's not really something she's done before so it may come as a surprise. If she did give gifts, they'd probably be more hand made objects that might be useful (a deck of cards she made for Cole's magic for example) or nice things that are done for the person rather than a present itself (Doing X's chores that they hate). These presents are obviously something bought in a store and are high quality, something Ella's never given out before.#>

<#bill: There are prior Christmas events...which I assumed were open to you, even though you weren't present, but perhaps not. What made me think of it was that my first reaction to this event was "oh, maybe Ella is giving us gifts because she got them on Christmas and wasn't prepared to reciprocate (as was the case with Cole the first year) but given a few days came up with stuff. But then I realized that you'd been present for a few years, so clearly, my first thought was wrong. If you look at those events: Christmas1866 Christmas1867 Christmas1868 you'll see that Celeste starts it, but then it becomes a regular thing with at least Celeste, Cole, and Jeanne giving gifts. As you describe your own gifts, these gifts are all basically homemade (or as is often the case with Cole's gifts - found items that have been cleaned up.
p.s. I love your homemade deck of cards idea. I actually thought to myself last night that it would be a great gift for someone to give Cole and was thinking about suggesting it to Ann or Courtney. #>

<#kate: Question for Bill: Does he give her two initials to sew? I'm not sure she's aware of Cole's last name. #>

<#bill: He would give her NWA as his initials. If she asks, he'll tell her what they stand for. #>

<#kate: I think she'd ask, "NWA?" #>

<#bill: He smiles, "Nicholas William Alexandre." #>

<#kate: She seems impressed by the proper name and then goes about sewing. #>

<#ann: Drat, a deck of cards was going to be one of Celeste's ideas for later when she has spending money and can buy nice paper. She was going to make Deco paint the pictures on and give it as a gift from them both. Oh well. I'll come up with something else. :-} #>

<#kate: Just putting Bill's sewing bit first since that seems to make sense with the flow of the "scene". Feel free to switch back / debate / rearrange if needed. #>

Sticking in some NPC action:

Girls:

Erin loves the braiding and joins the girls in getting their hair all made nice.

Valerie uses the ribbon as a choker/necklace, she gives Ella a slight smile but does not really speak about it beyond that.

<#kate: Ella replies to Valerie with the same little smile and goes on braiding. #>

Minnie loves the ribbons and quickly tries to organize the girls into doing hair. She gratefully accepts Ella's help and offers to braid Ella's hair in return. She really loves doing and getting her hair done and knows some complex braids.

Boys
Deco and Jefferson enjoy their handkerchiefs. They join in Ollie's hunt for who gave it to them. Jefferson uses his a lot, he tends to get allergies and is very grateful for the gift.

Deco's eventually ends up stained as he is but he usually can be seen carrying it around in his back pocket.

Shawn and Cal are also both grateful.
*

Cal seems to have a bead on who gave them, and winks and Ella but does not push, letting the other boys wonder for a bit.

<#kate: When he winks at her, she gives him an innocent raise of her brows like, "Who me?" and then continues sewing.#>

Cal laughs, pleased, and tucks his hanky into his coat pocket.

Cal and Shawn both have them with them when they go out to the gambling hall later that night.
