This page may need to be renamed. I realize that historically there is a real person called Marie Laveau that is doing Voodoo in town. I am cool with using that name. But to be 100% clear the character by that name has nothing to do with the historical person and is going to be a fictional NPC that I make up.
There are actually two big Voodoo presences in town.
There is Marie Laveau who is a bit more respectable. She has a shop in town, (though the bad side of town) and generally offers services, contacting the dead, charms, reading the future, etc.
There is also Rafael Arkadeus, a Swamp Shaman, who lives somewhere on the outskirts of town. A tall carismatic black man he dresses very nice and is a regular figure about the seedier parts of town. He is known to be magical, and if you want something a bit "stronger" than what Marie has to offer you deal with Rafael. Death curses, love charms, zombie dust, that sort of thing.
He is often in the presence of a large albino crocodile that seems to respond to his mental commands.
<#bill: Cole has always shown a bit of a fascination with magic and voodoo. When in town if he has the chance he'll scope out different voo doo shop. He has even gotten his hand on a discarded book or two and read up on voo doo. He's been saving for over a year to have a seance with renowned Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau. While he hasn't totally kept this a secret, he has kept it pretty quiet. While Minnie usually keeps her mouth shut about the transgressions of the other kids, Cole is concerned that if she knows why he's sneaking out that she'll blow the whistle. That said, the other kids are all pretty aware of Cole's plans because when they discussed doing other things for this night he turned them down. With a little pressing he is willing to tell them why, but swears them all to secrecy. Callahan is initially dismissive of whole idea as silly and shows no interest, but then it comes out that Valerie is planning on going as well and has, in fact, been saving too. This is the most interest she's really shown in anything the kids have done. Now it is unclear, if Callahan will go.#>
Erin is clearly interested in sort of a fantasy way, she likes to hear Cole talk about all the cool things Voodoo can do, just like she would be interested in hearing him talk about how magic works or whatever. She likes the idea that the world is full of magic and mystery. She does not seem very interested in practical bits of it (e.g. actually going to see a voodoo priest.)
I think that Valarie would go but I don't think she expresses interest. I think she just shows up when Cole leaves to go.
<#bill: Cole indicates that it's probably okay if others comes, but that they'll need some form of payment. Money, obviously works, but if people don't have money Cole has heard that Marie Laveau will except other kinds of payment....Cole and Valerie plan on paying with a combination of the the money they have set aside (which isn't much), some very old items Cole has managed to scavenge, a jar of beetle carapaces collected from the graveyard by Valerie, several unhatched robin eggs, a small jar of dead lizards preserved in gin, and if need be, a little bit of blood. The fact is, they're guessing a little bit at what it's going to take, but based on the information Cole gathered he thinks this should get them something. If other people want to come, they're going to have to come up with some more payment probably.#>
Again, tweak, Valarie does not share any plans for payment. She just goes. I dont think she conspires with Cole she just does what she plans to do. Its much more like, Cole is about to go by himself and poof Val shows up.
<#bill: Reactions of the PCs? Who thinks they'd want to come? What do they offer as payment? And does anyone have any suggestions on which of the NPCs, if any, might choose to come? #>

<#kate: I think Ella would be interested in going to either out of curiosity and the adventure of simply going to the bad side of town and finding this magical people, but I doubt she'd save up or anything to actually purchase something or have a question answered.#>
So a few questions for Bill:
1) Which Voodoo person are you going to?
I think the timeline unless PCs intercede is like this:
1) Cole has interest in Voodoo, reads books and things.
2) Some of the kids listen especially Erin but no one seems to share his deep interest. <#court: Jeanne is deeply and visibly concerned by Cole's fascination. She tries to convince him it is a dangerous pastime. #>
3) Cole saves up some money and other thing in plans to go see Voodoo person A.
4) Cole talks to the others about going on X night. Minnie tries to talk him out of it. Cole is not being talked out of it. <#court: Jeanne intently asks him about his plans, still looking shaken, but doggedly persisting in finding out all the details of what he is doing. #>
5) Cole goes off by himself. <#kate: I think Ella would tag along for the novelty of it.#> <#court: (Jeanne is holding here, seeing what happens above) #>
5) When he/they are leaving and about a block away from the orphanage, Valerie appears and goes along...
<#bill: I've read this and it all looks fine, but I'm holding for Ollie and Celeste...in case they, like Jeanne, have something to say about it in advance. Or, like Ella and Valerie, decide to come along.
Also, as far as who he meets with...it may depend on what information he has about them. Anything more than above? Did Celeste/Ollie/Jeanne bring back much info about Arkadeus after they're interaction in the swamp? <#court: will let you know as that event progresses. #>
@Court: Since Jeanne showed concern, does she state a preference? <#court: Sorry, don't understand. Preference for who to meet with? Might depend on swamp meeting, but generally she just tries to convince him that this is a dangerous thing that he should not get involved in. #>
