Wife: RoseBlack Rose Black
Physical Appearance: A tall and thin Caucasian male. He has dark black hair that is edged with gray.
Description: Mr. Black and his wife are the owners and operators of the TheStJamesHotel The St. James Hotel and TheStJamesOrphanage Orphanage of New Orleans, Louisiana. Mr. Black leaves the operation of the Orphanage, however, entirely to Mrs. Black.
A stern man, Mr. Black liked to keep to himself and rarely spoke with the orphans in his care when they were young. He does not seem to have a good way of speaking to children, and always speaks to the orphans as if they were adults. He usually seems sort of offput by the kids responding like kids and not adults.
He does well with Callahan in that the boy always had more of an adult outlook, and he also seems to have soft spot for Ollie once his dog takes to him.
He enjoys playing chess and plays with Shawn, Cole and Celeste once they show interest. He has an ivory set in his bedroom which he will bring out when requested.
He enjoys Ella's music quite a bit, and usually finds some excuse to sit on the porch when she is playing the piano.

He likes to smoke a pipe and, in the evenings, to drink. He generally seems quiet and sad. Mr. Black is a strong Confederate supporter and even after the war is over a Confederate flag hangs in the Black's apartment.
He has a very loyal 'coonhound, Jackson. Jackson does not respond well to the children in general. Save for Ollie. Ollie and the dog have a natural rapport and Ollie is given the chore of feeding, walking, and generally taking care of Jackson.
Mr. Black accompanies the boys and Abner on his yearly hunting trips. Jackson goes with him and is the main hunting dog for their little expeditions.
