Revision [27822]
This is an old revision of 1866.11.20.OllieFirstTowerNight made by CourtPetri on 2013-02-07 21:06:50.
Ollie sees folks going up to the tower after Lizzy's left them for the night. He follows. (Who might be going?)
Cal would invite/dare Ollie on the first night. He is not going to just go and ditch him. (He may have to use Jeanne to translate.
<#court: Though Jeanne has been there for a month and is certainly understanding more, she has not done much in terms of speaking English (or even trying to) until Ollie arrives, so I'm not sure Cal would use her for interpreting. Maybe a friendly hand gesture to join as they go out the window would work better? #>
Jeanne, seeing him watch the other kids crawl out the window, gives a smile and a shrug, and moves to go as well. (In French to Ollie)"I have not gone before," she tells him. "But I have watched them. It is only the kids, and they tell stories and play games."
<#bill: I have gotten the impression that Cal takes the lead on this...but if he wasn't asking/inviting Cole would have. The same goes for Jeanne. I know that Court is saying she hasn't gone before, but Cole would have invited/encouraged her early on...with his bad French/his Spanish/gestures/translation from Celeste. #>
<#court: I understand that Jeanne has been welcome - she just has not been very open thus far. She hasn't been rude, just not interested. However, there is a noticeable change at this point, in attitude and openness. #>
<#ann: Celeste watches this, and then tells Ollie "You come, she comes, then she gets to have fun too!" #>
<#court: Jeanne smiles at Celeste, then looks to Ollie. #>
Ollie and Jeanne head up to the tower. Cal, Shawn, Jefferson and Cole are already up there. Celeste is following behind. Seeing them arrive, Cal stands and announces, "Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight we have the honor of a new brother and sister among us, joining our merry band for the first time." He smiles broadly, understanding that Jeanne and Ollie don't know what he's saying, but still reveling in the ceremony of it all.
"Therefore, since they've come here to St. James to stay, we shall welcome them in the way which is our tradition." Cal pauses for dramatic effect. "Shawn: the crowns, please." Shawn produces two paper crowns, each made of newspapers and glue. He solemnly carries them over to Cal. Cal motions for Jeanne and Ollie to approach. Cautiously, they do. Jeanne notices that Deco, Erin and Valerie <#jonah: (maybe?) #> have followed behind them, and are watching the proceedings.
"Now everyone here knows me as Cal, but my full title is Cal the King. I rule over the kingdom of St. James with a kind hand. And as king it is my solemn duty to welcome and honor new family as they arrive. And to this end, as is our tradition, for one night and one night only, I shall cede my throne to the two of you. So come forward and be crowned." He motions vigorously for them to approach further, and then to kneel. Jeanne catches his drift and follows the instructions, and Ollie mimics his sister.
Cal takes the first crown from Shawn, and holds it in the air. "I crown thee Queen Jeanne!" he declares, slowly placing the crown on her head. The rest of the kids echo his proclamation, "All Hail Queen Jeanne!" He repeats the ritual with the second crown, "I crown thee King Ollie!" The assembled kids shout in reply, "All Hail King Ollie!".
"Now remember," Cal cautions, "you're just king and queen for tonight. But enjoy it while you can! Welcome to the Kingdom of St. James." Ollie and Jeanne clearly don't really follow what he's saying, but nod in acceptance, as it seems the right thing to do.
At that, Cal motions for them to rise, and says, "Well now, come meet your new family. Introduce yourselves." Ollie and Jeanne turn. "Let's see," says Cal, "You've met Cole and Celeste already. And this is Jefferson, he works in the kitchen. Here's Deco, and Shawn. There's Erin, and there's Valerie <#jonah: (again, maybe?) #>. And Minnie is probably sulking downstairs somewhere; you'll meet her eventually."
<#court: Cal continues. "To get you started in this family, the last person to arrive will tell you one thing about everyone present." He looks pointedly at Cole (since it's still Jeanne's first time at the Tower, he skips her, and Minnie and Deco are not there) and says cheerfully, "Looks like it's still you!" NeedsBill #>
<#court: When they have gone around everyone else, Cal turns to Ollie and Jeanne. "Okay, now it's your turn. One thing to tell us about yourself." He holds up one finger, and indicates that it's their turn. Jeanne, realizing a response is needed, points to herself questioningly and looks to Celeste, who nods encouragingly. Jeanne takes a breath and says, "Je suis un loup, et vous voici ma meute." Then, she tries again, slowly. She points to herself. "I... loup..." She bares her teeth in explanation, and looks to Cole and Celeste appealingly. "You... meute... ensemble... um..." She gestures with her hands, encompassing all of them, and then trails off and smiles, shrugging. Then she looks to Ollie, somewhat serious and somewhat amused. #>
<#jonah: (Awaiting further input before continuing...) #>
<#jonah: I sort of went out on a limb here, obviously, but I thought it would be cool to have some sort of rite of passage for the kids when they first get there, and I wanted to take a stab at a prototype of how it might go. Thoughts? #> <#court: Ditto! Feel free to comment/revise/etc... though it might be fun to do the "last person arrived" thing. #>
