The kids manage to cobble together some rocks and things so they can play, but it's hard to keep track of which knobbling stone is the knight and which one is the king. She starts talking about carving one herself. She says several times that she could use a knife from the kitchen to whittle with, but she never makes an actual move to do so, since Louis is pretty easy going, but there are some lines you do not cross, and using his good kitchen knives for anything other than food is not going to go over very well. She tries to use one of the steak knives they use in the dining hall, but it doesn't work very well, and she's caught and punished.
Cole, meanwhile, has been poking around and manages to dig up somewhere a very old, very dull, somewhat rusty knife. He polishes it and uses Louis's whetstone to sharpen it, then proudly presents it to Celeste as a present. She's thrilled, and starts trying to carve right away. She's somewhat surprised when she's not very good at it, but that doesn't stop her. With practice she eventually develops the skill.#>
