Revision [27505]

Celeste is sent out to buy sugar for Louis. On her way back, right in front of the orphanage, she is accosted by a trio of white boys about age ten or so. They back her up into a corner. They are not physically hurting her, but their comments are nasty and she is frightened that things must escalate. Suddenly Cole comes barreling out of an alleyway where he had been dumping ashes, and hurls himself at one of the older boys. The boys are momentarily stunned, and not entirely sure what to do about the much-younger boy, but Cole is burning with righteous indignation, so the town boys start fighting back. Celeste goes from worried about herself to worried about Cole, drops the sugar and grabs rocks to start pelting. The town boys, who were just looking for some "fun" and didn't expect this reaction, give up and run away.

Cole and Celeste are basically unhurt. Cole has a few scrapes, but nothing he can't hide from the adults. His biggest injury is a large bruise from where Celeste missed with a rock and hit him instead. Later Callahan insists on practicing rock throwing so that "this won't happen again. My army needs to be proficient with projectile weapons! Friendly fire is not acceptable!" Celeste rolls her eyes a little, but she's secretly proud, and learns to throw a rock with solid aim. Cole is thrilled when Callahan praises his military prowess.

Removing needs kelly seems fine to me...

<#bill: Looks good to me, Ann. Thanks for putting it up. The only thing I'd say is the language seems a bit more highbrow than I would have given Cole credit for at this age - but I think the sentiment is spot on. Maybe something like she runs over to him asking if he's okay as he pulls himself up from the ground. And he says "yeah..." as he's rubbing where she hit him. "Friendly fire hurt worse than what they did," he says with a teasing smile. "Sorry..." she says a little guiltily. "I can get you some ice." He shakes his head, "No..but maybe we could practice?" he says with a smile.

Also, it may not be part of this event...and it may be something easier to chat than to do on the wiki...but maybe we could have a race related conversation here. What are your thoughts on that? You think it's something they'd talk about explicitly or no? #>

<#ann: That's because it's Callahan talking, not Cole. We can make it Cole, though. I wasn't really planning that part, it just sort of rolled out as I was writing. I thought it'd be funny if she hit him, and then the Callahan in my head was appalled. I like your version better. Especially because that's extra bonding experience as Cole teaches Celeste how to properly throw a rock. Too bad we don't have enough free time for a baseball team!

And somehow I managed to miss your second paragraph. I honestly don't know if they'd talk about it or not, since all of my experience is with modern children. I think it would depend on the nature of the conversation. Maybe we can try to work it out in chat before Courtney arrives on Wednesday. #>

<#bill: Ann, I'm sorry. I totally read too fast and missed that it was Callahan talking. If you're okay with the change, I say we keep it because I like the increased bonding between them as well. #>

<#ann: Keeping the change then! Go Cole/Celeste rock throwing! #>
