Ideas
Kate: I think Jeanne is familiar with playing the washboard (a la zydeco and jazz) with thimbles - not formally, but in the way people gather in the evenings and play music in houses. Could be a fun moment with Ella? Or with Cole/Celeste (team up with harmonica/piano?)<#kate: That would definitely be a fun collaboration. Ella would be interested in learning how to play and about the songs, especially if they are in French. I think throughout her time there she'd pick up as much French (possibly Spanish too if the "secret language" thing is still a factor) as feasible, but would want to sing the songs as they were meant to be sung, ie in their native tongue. That goes for Cole too if he happens to sing or know of any Spanish songs. I'm not sure what kind of situation would inspire Jeanne to play/sing or have Cole/Celeste participate but I think we should definitely stick it in as a fun, bonding event.#>
<#court: I think Jeanne would like teaching songs in French. =) #>

Bill: maybe Jeanne and Cole could play with the Spanish/French thing... make up names for things they don't want adults to know they're talking about, that are hybrids of the two? Or... was Cole catching frogs with Callahan? Jeanne can totally hunt frogs. For serious. =)
<#kate: Not to weasel into this discussion, but I was wondering if you've thought of Jeanne's reaction to Abner's "boys only" trips. From the sound of it, she'd be totally comfortable in that environment.#>
<#court: That's interesting. I wonder how open it is - how much they discuss what they do there? Definitely if/when Ollie starts going, Jeanne will be more tuned in, though not sure what Ollie/Abner/the rest of the boys tell us. #>
Ann: I know Celeste is interested in nursing, does she have any background yet? We could have an interesting conversation about snakes, maybe. Or herbs. Or honestly, I think Celeste is who Jeanne will go to in the beginning (since they have the most connection so far) to find out the inside scoop about the adults/other kids in the orphanage. Could lead us somewhere! And - stuffed frog! Let's do something with this.
<#ann: She has a background of a little kid who is smart and observant and wants to do what she can. As she gets older she gets more information, partly because she is actively collecting medical knowledge from all sources. Finding out about herbs or snakebites or whatever would be up her alley. She does eventually decide not to be a nurse, but that's not for awhile. Celeste would love feeling like an insider and feeling important that she is a translator and source of knowledge, so that will keep her interested and at Jeanne's side for a few weeks while Jeanne is still a bit surly. (Not without reason, but kids this age don't have a lot of empathy.) #>
