1865.6.13 - 1865 June 13th - Celeste Rousseau arrives at the Orphanage at age 7.
<#ann: As the first to arrive, none of the rest of you see her when she first gets there. By the time others arrive, she has been at the orphanage for a few months. She is skinny, but with good height, implying that she was once used to eating more, but has not been eating well since arriving at the orphanage. She is clearly biracial, with dark chocolate eyes, frizzy brown hair she keeps tightly braided, and light brown skin. She generally has a bright red ribbon in her hair. Nora doesn't like any of the children, but she seems to ride Celeste even harder than the others, and often refers to her as the "snob" even years after Celeste has been there. When Cole shows up, Celeste is still reacting with surprise when the object of racial discrimination, but by the time everyone else gets there she is no longer surprised, though it often makes her angry. She has a temper, but it has a slow burn. She's far more likely to get revenge than to throw a punch. She is not shy, but she can be very guarded with new people, particularly adults. She enjoys reading and owns a handful of books. #>

<#bill: Nicholas arrives at the orphanage with an average height and build for a child his age. He has thick, midnight black hair. His eyes look like shiny pools of oil. He actually has dark green eyes, but they are so dark that unless gazed at in direct light they appear as black as his hair. But for the bright gold flecks in his irises one might think his eyes consisted of only large pupils. By contrast, his skin is marble white. The faint blue lines of veins can be easily traced under most of Nicholas' exposed skin.The overall effect is attractive. If, however, Nicholas is at all tired, it causes him to look sickly. While his skin tone gives the initial impression of a Caucasian heritage, his full lips, high forehead, and distinct cheek bones imply a mixed background. He arrives at the orphanage with little more than the clothes on his back - which seem quite worn, though at one time they were probably expensive. His only other possessions are two small soldier figurines which he seems to prize above all else and with which he is never without. Personality-wise, Nicholas is a quiet and thoughtful child, but not shy. He tends to look directly in the eye of whoever speaks to him, and with adults tends not to speak unless spoken to. In general, he seems to have something of a distrust for adults.#>

<#court: Jeanne arrives at the orphanage thin, hungry and quiet. She is wearing a threadbare rough cotton skirt and blouse, and moccasins, as well as a simple silver cross around her neck. She seems jumpy, easily startled by the bustle around her, and taking it all in with wide sapphire eyes. A plain girl, dirt-smudged and scraggly, she gravitates towards the corners and shadows of rooms - and from there, glares defensively at the world. She has flyaway brown hair and mud-streaked clothes. It soon becomes apparent that she does not understand the English conversation around her. (Personality: She is aloof and suspicious of people not on the "in" with her - but at the point she perceives someone as on her side, she is fiercely loyal. She is protective of her younger brother, and can be drawn into the relationships that he makes more easily. She is not highly educated but has a keen intellect and is quick to pick up on anything that suits her to learn.) #>

<#jonah: A small child is delivered by a Cajun fisherman to the orphanage. He turns out to be a younger brother of Jeanne. He is a wiggly child, and happy by nature. When he smiles, he keeps his lips pressed together into a long upward-facing C shape. He is outgoing and instinctively trusting, contrasting with his reclusive sister. When he is a bit older, his friendly and outgoing nature helps him to land a job as a bellhop at the hotel. He is physically small as a child, but has a voracious appetite and grows quickly. He's constantly moving in some respect: bouncing up and down or dancing or just fidgeting with his hands. He has a very hard time sitting for lessons, but Jeanne convinces him to stick it out. His restlessness does get him into trouble some times, but for whatever reason Mr. French and Nora seldom beat him. Perhaps because he's the youngest, they usually let him get away with a sincere (and sometimes tear-streaked) apology. Aside from his restlessness, he is seldom the instigator of mischief, though he is a willing accomplice. He has a fascination with animals, and has been caught feeding rats or stray cats and dogs, much to the chagrin of Mr Black. #>

1869.08.22.19:45 - 1869 August 22st - Ella arrives at the Orphanage at age 9 - 1869.08.22.1945.EllaArrives

<#kate: At 9, Ella is small for her age, barely reaching 48 inches and scrawny, no more then 50 pounds. She is all arms and legs, with scrapes and scabs on her elbows and knees and a few on her chin and cheeks. She has high cheekbones, a stubby little nose, and dark black, wavy hair reaching to mid-back that is usually plaited or a tangled mess. She has light brown skin with a warm undertone and large, light blue eyes mimicking the shallows of the Caribbean. Even for someone so young, she is strong willed and has a defiant backbone. She sticks to what she thinks is right especially in how people should treat one another, defends those she feels are being unduly berated and has an overall zest for life and curiosity about new things. She has a love of music and dancing and will take almost any opportunity (approved or not) to watch people sing, play or dance in the Hotel parlor or anywhere within range of the Orphanage. She eagerly learns music, both playing instruments and songs and she seems to have a knack for picking up such things. Her discovery of sheet music within the bench of the piano, inspires her to ask Louis about reading. -kate #>
