For the first two weeks Jeanne has been in the orphanage, she has been quiet and standoffish, though she does her work. She looks at everything and everyone carefully, taking it all in, and though she is not overtly rude, she has a general air of quiet defensiveness. She sleeps with her sack. The first full day she was there, she tried to take it around with her, and got into an altercation with Mr. French. She fought like a cat but ultimately had to give in. She was sore for a few days, and started keeping it under her mattress when she had to be out in the hotel.
Cole and Celeste have made overtures at friendship, and although Jeanne has flickers of moments when she lets her guard down, they are rare and followed by double defensiveness. Jeanne has not made any significant attempts in English, though she will respond in French if spoken to in basic French, or, occasionally, in Cole's Spanish.
