Santiago: "The old bastard will be on his heels, but we should not let up now."
Fio: So Renji is where now? Hanging out witz Radley?
Virgil says, "He is on his way here, with her and the shards. Nemo did not think it would be safe to travel though the sewers with the shards."
Devi: Why not?
Elana: The link that he was talking about?
Virgil: "I am uncertain of the details." Virgil says. Nemo, obivious to the conversation is sniffing the wall with a huge cone shaped device.
Santiago says, "Sebastian was worried that the destructive power of the shards might interact poorly with the sewers. Not an entirely unsafe bet, we know very little of how they operate."
Elana taps Nemo on the shoulder -- "Do you have any thoughts on what the link between the darkness and the sewers may be?" Elana is gesturing back towards the group, as the conversation goes on.
Nemo replies, 'WHAT WAS THAT MY DEAR?"
me: (can hold my question for the moment)
Elana, looking straight at Nemo, repeats the question, gesturing back at the group. Nemo removes the device from his nose and follows Elana back towards the group.
Nemo: “WHAT DARKNESS? IM NOT SURE I FOLLOW YOU?'
Elana: “You said a moment ago that Devi's experience implies a connection between the sewers and the ‘deeper darkness’…?”
Nemo: 'YES THE FACT THAT SHE TRAVELED FROM THE DEEPER DARKNESS TO THE SEWERS WOULD SEEM TO ESTABLISH THAT THERE IS A LINK BETWEEN THOSE TWO EXTRADIMENSIONAL SPACES. WHICH WOULD MAKE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SENSE, HOWEVER DIMENSIONAL THEROY HAS NEVER BEEN MY STRONG SUIT.”
Devi: "I am traveling to the Sewers? I am thinking Renji is carrying me through the Sewers from where he is finding me?"
Nemo says, "OH I SUPPOSE THAT IS POSSIBLE. I ASSUMED THAT HE FOUND YOU IN THE SEWERS, BUT I COULD BE WRONG. WHERE WAS RENJI BEFORE HEADING HERE?"
Devi shrugs
Virgil says, "We are not certain, his last contact had him with a plan going after Barkely, but where that phonecall came from is anyones guess and that was hours before he showed up here."
Serena says, "No point in speculating, he will be here in a few hours."
Elana: “…with Radley, I believe.” Virgil nods.
Alaistar is vaguely paying attention...but he's thinking.
Devi pipes up, "It was seeming to me that there is a lot of things happening and being planned. Will we still be here in a few hours?”. At that, Alaistar picks up his head.
Elana looks speculatively at Jacob, and then turns to Alastair and asks, "Do you have a suggestion for the best way to go about finding the wraiths?" Jacob looks sad and quiet.
After she speaks, Alaistar says, "I'm going to send Lucas to track Tiger. While the wraiths are elusive, there should some signs....and Lucas is a good tracker.”
Chen says, "Do you think that wise? The young one has never faced this foe before."
"I don't want him to engage Tiger..." Alaistar says. "Only to track.His skills and speed should serve him well."
Elana to Alaistar: "Tracking Tiger because he is the known quantity, since we don't know who the other is?"
"Because I think he will be the easier to track mundanely. He will have 13 shells. 13 bodies to looks for...13 sets of footprints, if you will."
Elana looks surprised. “13 manifestations at once?”
JP: Needs Retcon? NeedsBill NeedsKelly
Alaistar: "I have not decided who to send for (who was the other clan?)"
Kelly: (There is no definate on the other clan)
"Manifestations?" Alaistar says, "not exactly."
Devi: "Are those 13 manifestations needing to be near each other? Or can they be popping up on opposite sides of the world?"
Virgil says, "Distance is meaningless to them"
Alaistar: “When wraiths exists in this world, they have always needed a body to inhabit...a shell. Tiger has always taken 13. Some use only one shell.”
Elana: "Whereas the others take one?"
Nemo says, "TO BE FAIR, THERE IS ONLY ONE THAT USES ONLY ONE SHELL ALL THE OTHERS USE SOME OTHER MULTIPLE.”
Alaistar nods.
Elana suddenly looks grave. To Alaistar: "Who uses only one? How many does Snake use?"
Nemu: “THE OX WRAITH IS THE ONE TO ONLY USE ONE SHELL. SNAKE USES AS MANY AS IS APPROPIRATE, HE IS NOT ONE FOR PLEASANTRIES. THOUGH THE MASK ISSUE COMPLICATES THINGS, SINCE IT ALLOWS THEM APPARENTLY TO REPRODUCE RAT'S TRICK AT A WHIM. THOUGH THANKFULLY OUR NEW ADDITIONS DID NOT APPEAR TO HAVE MASKS, WHAT THAT MEANS i DONT KNOW.”
Elana looks grim. "Rat's trick being to inhabit bodies?"
Kelly: “OH NO DEAR EVERY WRAITH CAN DO THAT.”
Alaistar: “He means, to keep their shadowy presence completely hidden within the shell.”
Nemo: “RAT IS ABLE TO HIDE HIS ESSENCE WHILE STILL MAINTAINING A CONNECTION, MOST WRAITHS MUST REDUCE THEIR PUPPETS TO HOLLOWS TO ACOMPLISH THAT FEAT”
Elana: "I see, thank you."
Alaistar: "Of course, we would be benefited by knowing how they create their masks" he says looking at Elana and then away. "But, unfortunately, we do not. Chen, has there been activity in shadow?"
Devi: "Was Tiger having a mask when he is in the world before?"
Virgil shakes his head, "That trick is a recent addition."
"Well," Alaistar says with a bitter smile, "relatively"
Fio pipes up, "So Snake is Vlad. Are tzere any otzer of tzese wraiths who have consistent identities?"
Santiago says, "Not that we know of Senor"
Alaistar shakes his head, "Until this most recent break out, all wraiths, " he pauses, "all other hostile wraiths, to our knowledge, trapped - exiled from this world. Masks have been found over the years, but they were all destroyed."
Devi says, "Snake is not being a hostile wraith?" Elana nods in agreement with Devi, and also waits for an answer.
Alaistar gives smile, "Oh he's hostile... I was saying he was the exception."
Fio: “So how long has Vlad been around tzen?”
Elana, slowly, to Fio: "I am not as well-versed in this, but I believe Snake has not always been Vlad, either... there was some evidence of him being Rasputin in the past... he has changed identities over time. I believe."
Alaistar nods, "Exactly, Elana. And before he was Rasputin, I knew him as the Armor Smith many years earlier. I don't know if he's had identities in between. But, Vlad arrived shortly after we killed Rasputin in (exact date - the 19 teens).”
Elana: "Meaning that Rasputin was merely one shell but not the essence, correct?"
Alaistar shakes his head, "It's not like that exactly. I never saw or felt Snake's essence with Rasputin. And I never saw the mask."
Elana looks confused. "With no evidence of his essence, what led you to believe Rasputin was Snake?"
Alaistar: "I'm sorry, I have been unclear. I don't mean to say that Vlad is Snake....exactly. There is a being - what exactly he is I do not know. That being was the Armor Smith, and then he was Rasputin, and now he is Vlad. As Vlad, he wears the Snake mask. When the mask is in use, it is little different than if Snake were present. It’s as if he is possesed by snake..the only difference being his free will...his soul, if that being has one, is not destroyed in the process as it normally would be. Essentially, they coexist.”
Elana: "And do we not know that 'that being' is a wraith?"
Alaistar shakes his head. “ No, we do not know precisely what that being is, but even many many years ago he was a being of immense power.”
Devi: "So he is coexisting with Rasputin, or it is being new with Vlad?"
Nemo: THE MASK, AND THUS THE SNAKE WRAITH'S ESSENCE FIRST APPEARED WITH VLAD.
Alaistar: Alaistar nods.
Fio: And we have no clue as to who the body we now call Vlad was, before he took tze mask?
Elana: "So before Vlad... Snake was just a wraith... who could make hollows... but did not have a corporeal identity with his essence...?"
Alaistar: "No, but I know that the same being was Rasputin. I can feel that much."
Nemo: “THE KEY IS TO NOT CONFUSE THE BODY WITH THE WRAITH. WRAITHS EXIST AS SEPARATE BEINGS, THE FLESHY BODIES ARE JUST LIKE CLOTHING TO YOU OR I.”
Alaistar: "But necessary clothing for them to exist in this world. At least that is what we have always believed. It was always necessary for them to maintain a presence here. In shadow, in that other dimension, they have no bodies they all 'essence’.”
Nemo: CORRECT! LIKE A SPACE SUIT, THEY REQUIRE IT TO EXIST HERE, BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SPACE SUIT ANY MORE THAN I AM MY SHORTS
Elana looks disturbed and bemused, and pats the air distractedly
Nemo continues: “WHAT THE MASK APPEAR TO DO IS ALLOW THE "CLOTHES' IN THIS METAPHOR TO CONTINUE SOME SEMBLANCE OF EXISTANCE OUTSIDE OF THEIR LIFE AS CLOTHING, THOUGH WE CANNOT BE CERTAIN.”
Alaistar: "To be clear: In 17?? (exact date), we had our final battle with the wraiths. We believed we had exiled them completely from this world...but over time we found these masks...they had somehow left them behind and could inhabit the wearer as if the wearer was possessed - but without consuming the wearers soul. That, until this most recent outbreak, was the only presence they maintained in this world, to our knowledge, since that date.”
Serena looks ansy, "This is all well and good...but whats the plan? Are we just going to sit here and wait till Lucas gets back to us?"
Virgil says, "At least a few of us will need to prepare to receive the shards. They will be here in a few hours."
Alaistar nods, “Yes, but we do need another tracker for the remaining wraith. Chen, are you well?"
Chen nods, but Virgil interjects. "We are not certain that there is another."
Elana looks at Chen. "If you go, I would like to join you."
Alaistar shrugs, “That is true. but while we don't understand the physics of it all just yet, if Devi's perception is accurate i'm not sure why one would have gotten through and not the other."
Devi looks mildly annoyed that he would question that her perception might not be accurate, but doesn't interject.
Serena says, "But how are you going to track something we dont know exists, where would you even begin?"
Alaistar: "I wanted to try to track it metaphysically. If we move quickly enough, there may be some energy still to track."
Devi: "Wouldn't the other wraith have to have come out in the same place as the first on - the Tiger?"
Nemo: “IN THEORY THAT SHOULD BE THE ONLY PLACE WHERE THE CONNECTION IS WEAK. BUT ITS NOT AS IF ANY HAVE EVER BROKEN OUT THIS WAY. DO WE KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE WEAKNESS IN THE FIRST PLACE? ALSO VIRGIL BRINGS UP A GOOD POINT. WE HAVE NO FACILITIEES TO HOUSE THE SHARDS. I ASSUME WE ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE MI-YEN HOLD THEM FOR STORAGE.”
Alaistar: "I was hoping the stone in which the shard was brought to us might be used...though I realize the resonance has long since gone."
Nemo: “AHEM. THE STONE HAS NO RESONANCE LEFT ITS BEEN CENTURIES. I SUPPOSE I COULD, NO WE DONT HAVE ANY DRAGONS TEARS...PERHAPS A RESONANCE TIME LOOP, NO THAT WILL NEVER WORK WITHOUT A VACUUM.”
Alaistar: "We could return them to shadow."
This is Jonah's rewritten version of the conversation where it is Nemo, not Fio, who brings up the bloodsteel ball found in Baghdad.
Nemo: “HOW? WE HAVE NO ACCESS?” Nemo furrows his brow in thought. “WHEN MI-YEN FOUND THE SHARDS, THEY WERE EMBEDDED IN A MOST UNUSUAL MATERIAL — SOME SORT OF AMORPHOUS METALLIC BALL. IT IS EXTREMELY PECULIAR THAT ANY MATERIAL IS ABLE TO CONTAIN THE SHARDS. IF WE COULD ONLY CREATE MORE OF THAT FASCINATING SUBSTANCE… WHEN SHE RETURNS, PERHAPS I CAN EXAMINE IT FURTHER IN MY LABORATORY. HOWEVER, MY PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS INDICATED THAT I WOULD NEED A PERIOD OF STUDY OF AT LEAST 27 YEARS IN ORDER TO ADEQUATELY ASSESS ITS BASIC PROPERTIES. PERHAPS THAT IS IMPRACTICAL IN THE CURRENT SITUATION.”
Fio’s ears perk up, “What about tzat ball? Did tzey find it in tzat camp in tze desert?”
Virgil replies: “Yes, Mi-Yen found all of the shards embedded in it, as if they had all struck it at once.”
Fio gives a sassy, know-it-all look: “Is tzat so? Tzen, I can make you a holder for tzem shards, no problem."
All eyes turn to Fio.
Fio says, “Seems like my goupy self can hold onto tzem”
Virgil says, "Your goopy self?"
Alaistar: "His blood?"
Elana: “There's also a place we might be able to keep them.” Looking sidelong at Fio, "Properly gooped, that is.”
Nemo: “FASCINATING, WHY DO YOU BELIEVE YOUR BLOOD WOULD BE ABLE TO WITHSTAND THE DESTRCUTIVE POWER OF THE SHARDS?”
Fio: "Dunno, just does, I guess. You can have a look and tell me how it works, tzen?" he says, to Nemo.
Nemo: “MAY I HAVE A SAMPLE?”
Fio looks put out: "It's never my mind tzey love; only my body." He gets up and puts his arm around Nemo's shoulders, "Ok, so where you want to test tzis stuff? We go to tze lab?"
Nemo: “THE LAB IS MOSTLY A JUMBLE OF CRAP AT THE MOMENT,” he guides Fio to the cart and pulls on a pair of goggles. Santiago wanders over to assist, pocketing his flask.
"At tze moment?" Fio laughs
Nemo: YES ITS USUALLY FAR MORE ORGANIZED. CONTROLED CHAOS.
Alaistar: "If you would be willing Fio...you just seem to hate to leave your...goop, lying around. We would need it - possibly quite long term."
As they walk to the cart, Fio says to Al: "I don't tzink long term I can help you. But for short time, mebbie."
Virgil turns to Alaistar, "Well hopefully that resolves that. So what did you have in mind for tracking the wraiths?"
Elana (to Al & Fio): "If they had goop on them long enough to get them stored, to where they did not need to be touched, would they be safe to lie without goop? I mean, are they only destructive to organic matter?"
Nemo: “NO, THEY WILL LITERALLY UNMAKE ANYTHING THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH. AS FAR AS I KNOW ONLY THE LIFESPARK, AND A VERY SPECIAL SELECTION OF NATURAL MATERIALS FROM THE SOURCE CAN CONTAIN THEM.”
Devi: "How are they lying on the sand then? When I wanted to...acquire one earlier."
Nemo: “I HAVE NO IDEA. WE DID NOT HAVE A CHANCE TO EXAMINE THEM BEFORE THERE WAS COMBAT.”
Alaistar says, "It may have something to do with how they first arrived. If the resonance of the sand was some how changed when the shard were first deposited… But we don't know how the shards entered this world.”
Nemo turns to Fio, 'IF YOU COULD PRODUCE SOME FOR ME?"
Elana: "If we can determine what would make it possible for them to lie safely in a storage container, I believe I can store them in a long-term facility."
Fio produces some bloodsteel from his fingertip. Nemo takes note and begins to examine it.
All eyes turn back to Elana.
Elana: "I don't have an answer for how they entered or what materials to use. So those are the first steps, clearly."
Elana: "Materials to use to store them, I mean. If Fio cannot do it in the long-term, and if short-term 'goop' is inadequate."
Devi: "The long term facility you were using when they are stealing the pig-boy sword? I am not trusting security."
Elana: “No, not there. So... would it be possible to get back to this sand?"
Alaistar: "In Baghdad," Alaistar says, “it would not be safe."
