Wraiths and Hollows – A treatise by Sebastian Nemo
To understand Wraiths, one must first come to terms with Hollows. To put it bluntly, Hollows are humans without a soul. As to what the nature of the soul is, and what happens to a soul when it dies, those are all topics beyond the scope of this paper. Suffice it to say that all humans are born with souls. However though various processes it is possible for a human to lose their soul. Common logic would dictate that a human without a Soul would die, and for the most part this is the case. However in some cases the body can continue to exist without a soul. These unfortunate beings are called Hollows.
The word Hollow appears to have been assigned to them by peoples in Rural China around 1800 BCE the term appears to come from a feeling that those who are in tune with the supernatural can sense. Though to the visual senses, Hollows appear to be normal humans. However those with a strong sixth sense, can sense a wrongness about them, and empty or “hollowness”. It is unsurprising that the term was coined as it is an apt way to describe these beings.
They can arise spontaneously in humanity, seemingly at random, Hollows have been know to arise from all walks of life, and from all races. There have been no records of a metahuman Hollow, but history is spotty at best when it comes to these records and that omission should not be taken for immunity.
It is notable that there is no record of naturally occurring female Hollows. Females can still be taken and twisted by Wraiths, but the process is more difficult it seems and should bear more investigation when time allows.
