Summary
Years of bad hunting causing suffering and starvation in the Aleuqit tribe. In an attempt to remedy the situation the tribe begins worshiping at the gods they believe inhabit a small island in the Aleutian chain that is known to have a powerful aura about it. The legends say that there are evil gods that inhabit this place but because of the hardships that the Aleuqit tribe has endured the elders choose to seek help from these gods as the other gods seem to have abandoned them. Other tribes in the area become concerned with the actions of the Aleuqit Tribe, fearing that their worship will empower the evil gods as well as anger the good gods, whom they believe will eventually come to their aid. In order to prevent the good gods from being angered, the other Aleut Tribes attack the Aleuqit Tribe. This results in a huge battle and massive death on both sides. Unknown to the Tribes, this death empowers He Who Does Not Sleep, weakening the prison that contains him and breaking off pieces that fall into the pit around it. One of these shards will become the Shard of the Dark Star.
Unable to participate in the battle, Maka returns to discover his tribe has been eliminated and falls into a deep depression after finding his family, friends and entire people decimated. This emotional instability enables He Who Does Not Sleep to draw Maka onto the island and finally passing into this world by inhabiting Maka's body like a shell.
