A "spark" is the elemental characteristic responsible for the metahuman gift. It travels from one life to the next, and those who inherit it often exhibit metahuman abilities. Sometimes it is carried in the bloodlines of particular families, such as the KnightFamily Knight Family or the MohammedFamily Mohammed Family. Sometimes it will visit only one member of a particular family. Regardless of their lineage, a spark can only be received by an individual who is a carrier, not a normal human. The abilities that come with a spark are usually unique, although those sparks that run in families have a tendency to hold on to a similar theme from one bearer to the next.
The characteristics of the Spark are not well understood. It is thought in various circles that there will always be 1000 metahumans on the planet at any time. This would imply that there were exactly 1000 sparks. How exactly they travel from person to person is unknown, but it is rumored that the ShuttleOfArachne Shuttle of Arachne can be used to track a particular spark, lifetime to lifetime.
One spark, called the LifeSpark, is uniquely powerful. There is only one like it known to the world, and the bearer of the LifeSpark is both a powerful metahuman, as well as a persistently hunted individual due to the properties associated with that particular spark.
